PRJ: First Instance of Resource Name Assigned to Task

This article was previously published under Q113132

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you have more than one resource with the same name, when you drag any resource with this name from the Resource Assignment dialog box to a task, the first resource in the list that has this name is assigned to the task.

WORKAROUND

To assign multiple resources with the same name to tasks in a project, use the following steps in Project 2010 (the following example assumes your project contains Task1 and Task2, and two resources named Jane with resource ID numbers 1 and 2):
  1. From the View menu, select Other Views and choose More Views.
  2. From the Views list, select Task Entry and choose Apply.
  3. On the Gantt chart, select Task1.
  4. Select the Task Form (the bottom view of the Task Entry view). In the resource ID field, type 1 and choose OK.
  5. On the Gantt chart, select Task2.
  6. Select the Task Form (the bottom view of the Task Entry view). In the resource ID field, type 2 and choose OK.
The resource Jane with ID number 1 is assigned to Task1, while the resource Jane with ID number 2 is assigned to Task2.

To assign multiple resources with the same name to tasks in a project, use the following steps in Project 2007 and earlier versions (the following example assumes your project contains Task1 and Task2, and two resources named Jane with resource ID numbers 1 and 2):

  1. From the View menu, choose More Views.
  2. From the Views list, select Task Entry and choose Apply.
  3. On the Gantt chart, select Task1.
  4. Select the Task Form (the bottom view of the Task Entry view). In the resource ID field, type 1 and choose OK.
  5. On the Gantt chart, select Task 2.
  6. Select the Task Form (the bottom view of the Task Entry view). In the resource ID field, type 2 and choose OK.
The resource Jane with ID number 1 is assigned to Task1, while the resource Jane with ID number 2 is assigned to Task2.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
