Task scheduled for nonworking time created as milestone

This article was previously published under Q113154

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you create a task by dragging on the Calendar or the Gantt Chart, and you start dragging on a nonworking day and stop dragging on a nonworking day, the task is created as a milestone.

WORKAROUND

To avoid creating a milestone task when you create a task by dragging on a view, do either of the following:
  • If you are creating a task in the Gantt Chart view in Project 2007 or earlier, select the Advice About Scheduling check box under PlanningWizard on the General tab of the Options dialog box. If you are using Project 2010, select Advice from Planning Wizard check box under Planning Wizard on the Advanced tab of the Options dialog box. When these PlanningWizards are turned on, and you drag on the Gantt Chart starting on a nonworking day, you receive the following message
You moved '(ID n)' to start on a nonworking day. (startdate)
where "n" is the ID number of the task you created and "Startdate" is the date on the Gantt Chart from which you started dragging. You then have the option to move the task to the next working day, or to make the scheduled start day a working day.
  • When you create a task by dragging on the Calendar or the Gantt Chart, start dragging on a working day and/or stop dragging on a working day.

MORE INFORMATION

PlanningWizards do not appear when you edit your project in the Calendar view. Because of this, when you format and edit your project in this view, you receive the same results as when you format and edit your project in the Gantt Chart view with the PlanningWizards turned off.
