SYMPTOMS

After you install the FAT32 file system on a drive that uses OnTrack Disk Manager version 6.03 or 7.04, one or both of the following symptoms may occur:
  • All drives use MS-DOS compatibility mode.
  • The computer seems to take an unusually long time to boot.

CAUSE

Dynamic Drive Overlay is unable to find files in the root folder that it needs to start correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:
  • Configure Disk Manager to avoid searching the root folder for overlay files, or upgrade Disk Manager to version 8.0 or later.

For information about or assistance with configuring Disk Manager, please contact OnTrack Technical Support.
  • OnTrack has an upgrade patch available at the following Web site that resolves this issue without the need to change overlay settings using Dm.exe:
    http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/ (http://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com/)

MORE INFORMATION

Dynamic Drive Overlay makes calculations for the starting root folder cluster based on FAT12 and FAT16 volumes and returns a value of zero for FAT32 volumes. This occurs because of changes made in the root folder structure. The overlay software searches all possible clusters in the root folder for its overlay files.

Configuring the Disk Manager Dynamic Drive Overlay software to avoid searching the root folder causes Disk Manager to not hook the DOS Arena Chain, forcing Disk Manager to load low in conventional memory.

Disk Manager is manufactured by OnTrack Computer Systems, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
