INFO: Anyone Can Run SSARC.EXE if There Is No Admin Password
This article was previously published under Q157985
SSARC.EXE and SSRESTOR.EXE are utilities included with Visual
SourceSafe 5.0 that allow users to archive specific versions of projects or files and restore
those archives back to the original or to a different database.
According to the documentation, SSARC.EXE can only be run by the SourceSafe
administrator. However, if the administrator has no password, any user can
run the program.
- Run or switch to the SourceSafe Administrator utility and remove the
admin password (if there is one).
- From the DOS prompt, switch to the VSS\WIN32 directory, and then type:
"SS WHOAMI"
Your login name is echoed to the console. - From the server installation of SourceSafe, switch to the WIN32
subdirectory and run SSARC.EXE <archive file to create> <project>.
Note that the program runs.
- Run or switch to the SourceSafe Administrator utility and create an
admin password.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3, and note that you will be prompted for the admin
password.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
