PRJ: Task Moves Unexpectedly When Dragging a Task to a New Date

This article was previously published under Q178184

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you drag a task to a new date, the task may not remain at the date you dropped it on, but moves to a future date instead.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a resource calendar has exceptions (nonworking time) for a period that is set as Working time in the project calendar. For example, a new project has a task with a resource assigned, but the resource calendar has a week set as Nonworking.

When you drag the task that the resource is assigned to a day that is set as Nonworking, the task moves to the next possible working day, and no message appears.

A task cannot be scheduled during a period when the resource assigned to it has nonworking time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the versions of Microsoft Project listed above.
