Unable to Select a Higher Screen Area in Display Properties
This article was previously published under Q182595
If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware:
When you try to increase the screen area in the Display Properties dialog
box, you may be unable to choose a higher screen area. For example, your
monitor may support a maximum screen area of 1600 X 1200 pixels, but this
setting may be missing from the Screen Area box.
This behavior can occur if your monitor's Extended Identification Data
(EDID) contains incorrect information about your monitor.
To resolve this issue, manually install your monitor. To do so, use these
steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-
click Display.
- Click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.
- Click the Monitor tab, click the "Automatically detect Plug & Play
monitors" check box to clear it, and then click Apply.
- Click Change, click Next, click "Display a list of all the drivers in a
specific location, so you can select the driver you want," and then
click Next.
- Click Show All Hardware, and then follow the instructions on the screen
to finish installing your monitor.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
