SYMPTOMS

If you are using Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) authentication on your proxy server but a remote Web server uses Basic authentication, Internet Explorer may prompt you for your credentials one more time than is necessary. This behavior occurs with Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 or the version of Internet Explorer included in Windows 98.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain and install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2. You can obtain Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 from the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx)
