This article was previously published under Q192798
If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware:
After you install Microsoft Windows 98 on an NEC or Packard Bell computer that includes a Sound 4 WinModem, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:
- The modem does not appear in Device Manager.
- When you run the diagnostics utility in the Modems tool, you receive the following error message:
- Dial-Up Networking programs cannot gain access to the modem.
- When you start Windows, you receive the following error message:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a
Windows application.
The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file,
but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated
application using its uninstall program or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device
file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
