No Modem Sounds After Upgrading to Windows 98
This article was previously published under Q195219
If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware:
After you upgrade to Windows 98, you may not hear any sounds (such as
dialing or handshaking) from your Sound III 336SP or Sound 4 modem or your LT WinModem when you try to establish a modem connection.
This behavior can occur if the modem is muted during Windows 98 Setup.
To resolve this behavior, turn on the volume for your modem using the
Volume Control tool:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to
Entertainment, and then click Volume Control.
- On the Options menu, click Properties.
- In the Show The Following Volume Controls box, click the Modem check box to select it. For an LT WinModem, click the Phone Line check box to select it.
- Click OK.
- Under Modem, click the Mute check box to clear it.
- On the Options menu, click Exit.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
