SUMMARY

Windows 98 provides power schemes that you can use to configure your computer to go on standby, and shut off your monitor after a predetermined period of system inactivity.

MORE INFORMATION

The following power schemes are available in Windows 98:

  • Home/Office Desk
  • Portable/Laptop
  • Always On

Home/Office Desk

Choose this scheme for desktop computers. This scheme is installed with the Typical, Compact, and Custom Setup options.

Portable/Laptop

Choose this scheme to optimize your portable computer. This scheme includes aggressive settings for running on batteries (the AC settings are the same as desktop), and is installed with the Typical, Compact, Custom, and Portable Setup options.

In addition to the tabs provided for the desktop scheme, Power Management for portable computers includes the Alarms and Battery Meter tabs. A major difference between power management for desktop and portable computers is that you can change settings based on battery use for a portable computer.

Always On

Choose this scheme for use with personal servers. This scheme is similar to Home/Office, but has the standby timer disabled and the hard disk timer is increased. This scheme is the default for Advanced Power Management (APM) desktop computers. Note that your computer is able to perform background, scheduled, or event driven tasks, even though your computer appears to be "off".

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

The title is KB 2000403, but the text is from 200040. It looks like someone used a char(6) column for the reference number! http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2000403 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/200040
