SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to connect to a Macintosh network printer or share, you may receive the following error message:
Personal MACLAN will not work on Windows 98.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you upgrade to Windows 98 from Microsoft Windows 95 and you use Miramar Systems, Inc. PC MACLAN software to connect to Macintosh computers and AppleTalk printers.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Upgrade to PC MACLAN 6.2 or later.

NOTE: Versions of PC MACLAN earlier than 6.2 are not supported by Miramar Systems for use in Windows 98 and are not compatible with Windows 98.
  • Run the PC MACLAN Windows 98 update (if you run PC MACLAN 6.2 or later) that is available from Miramar Systems. Follow the instructions that are provided with the update from Miramar Systems, Inc.
  • Remove Miramar Systems AppleTalk Client and Miramar Systems AppleTalk Protocol for Network Driver Interface Specification (NDIS) 3.1 before you upgrade to Windows 98, and then reinstall the client and protocol after you complete the upgrade.

How to Remove and Reinstall PC MACLAN

To remove and reinstall the PC MACLAN client, follow these steps:
  1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  2. Click Miramar Systems AppleTalk Client, and then click Remove.
  3. Click Miramar Systems AppleTalk Protocol for NDIS 3.1, and then click Remove.
  4. In the network properties dialog box click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.
  5. Install Windows 98.
  6. On the Start menu, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
  7. Click Add, click Protocol, and then click Miramar Systems.
  8. Click Miramar Systems AppleTalk Protocol for NDIS 3.1, and then click OK.
  9. Click Add, click Client, and then click Miramar Systems.
  10. Click Miramar Systems AppleTalk Client, and then click OK.
  11. In the network properties dialog box click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this behavior is not caused by an issue in Windows 98, but may be caused by design changes in Windows 98. For more information about resolving this issue, contact the program's manufacturer.
