The presence information for a Microsoft Office Communications Server user may not appear, or may appear intermittently in SharePoint. This behavior occurs when a user's Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) does not match
the user's primary e-mail address or when the user has multiple e-mail addresses.
The presence indicator on a SharePoint site uses the NAME.DLL ActiveX control installed by an Office client installation. The NAME.DLL provided by Office 2003 does not search for the user's SIP address to obtain the presence information. If a user's SIP
proxy address and the user's default e-mail address are different the presence information cannot be shown.
To resolve this problem, follow these steps.
Step 1: Add a SIP proxy address in Exchange Server for the user account that specifies the user's SIP URI
Microsoft Exchange Server 2003
- Open Active Directory User's and Computers.
- Double-click the user.
- Click the E-mail Addresses Tab.
- Click New.
- Click Custom Address. Type the SIP URI in the E-mail address field, and then type
SIP in the E-mail type field.
- Click OK two times.
- Wait for the Active Directory directory service and Exchange to synchronize.
Exchange Server 2007 or Exchange Server 2010
By default, Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 can obtain a Communications Server user's SIP URI from Active Directory and populate the SIP proxy address automatically.
Step 2: Add two registry entries (Office 2003 SP2 or Office 2003 SP3)
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection,
back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
