PUB2000: Parts of Graphic Missing When Pasted as Picture

This article was previously published under Q212549

SYMPTOMS

If you copy a collection of drawing objects to the clipboard and paste them on a page as a picture, some of the lines may appear to be missing or partially drawn. When you print the page or publish it as a Web page, the lines appear correctly.

If you change the zoom percentage, the missing lines reappear. They generally appear when the zoom percentage is 75% or higher (the exact percentage depends on the resolution settings of your display.)

CAUSE

Lines, boxes, circles, and so forth are self-contained Publisher metafile drawing objects, whether they are separate or grouped objects. They contain all the necessary information to be displayed correctly on your screen (including consistent measurement units, so that all objects appear in the same relative size).

When you paste this type of object as a picture, Publisher converts it to a single metafile drawing object. This new metafile object has different measurement units. It also contains information about both the lines that make up the object and the areas between the lines. Thus, the empty space behind the lines are displayed, rather than the lines.

When you change the zoom percentage, Publisher interprets more of the measurement units, resulting in more of the lines being displayed.

Microsoft welcomes suggestions or comments about changes in functionality and product design.
