PUB2000: How to Reinstall Scanner Software
This article was previously published under Q212606
This article describes how to reinstall the TWAIN components installed by
Microsoft Publisher and the software that comes with your scanner. This
article is intended to be general in nature and discusses only the TWAIN
component of image scanning software. Some software vendors may have
specific reinstallation steps that apply to their software.
To reinstall the TWAIN components, follow these steps:
- Remove the following files from your Windows folder:
- Twain.dll
- Twain_32.dll
- Twunk_16.exe
- Twunk_32.exe
- Rename the \Windows\Twain folder and or \Windows\Twain_32 folder. This folder contains a proprietary library file that is installed with your scanner software and has a .ds extension.
- Install the software that came with your scanner to its default location. This should replace the .ds file.
- Test the scanner software, by itself, to see if it works. Try scanning a picture directly into Publisher. If the test is successful, you are done. If the test fails, go to step 5.
- On the Help in Publisher, click Detect and repair.
If you are still unable to scan directly from Microsoft
Publisher, then Publisher is probably not compatible with the TWAIN
interface of your scanner.
NOTE: TWAIN is a standard protocol that allows many different kinds of scanners and digital cameras to work with many different software programs. It is developed jointly by a number of companies, including Logitech and Hewlett-Packard.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
