32-bit SQL Server failover clustering is not supported on 64-bit versions of Windows

SUMMARY

A 32-bit installation of Microsoft SQL Server failover clustering is not supported on 64-bit versions of Windows. However, the Setup for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or for Microsoft SQL Server 2008 may let you install 32-bit failover clustering for the SQL Server Engine and for SQL Server Analysis Services on a 64-bit version of Windows.

Note This issue does not occur in the following versions of SQL Server. In these versions, Setup blocks the installation of 32-bit Microsoft SQL Server failover clustering on 64-bit versions of Windows:
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Cumulative Update 2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2012

WOW64 not supported for SQL Failover Clustering

The SQL Server 2008 R2 Best Practice Analyzer (SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA) provides a rule to detect this unsupported configuration. The SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA supports both SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2. If you run the BPA tool and encounter an Error that has the title of Setup -WOW64 not supported for SQL Failover Clustering, then your 32-bit SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2 installation is installed in this unsupported configuration.SQL Server 2008
