Windows Server 2008 R2 - Microsoft VDI Configuration

Microsoft Professional Advisory Services is a support option that provides short-term, proactive, consultative support beyond break-fix product maintenance needs. This includes working with the same technician for assistance with issues like product migration, code review, or new program development and is a remote, phone-based support option. This service is typically used for shorter engagements, and is designed for developers and IT professionals who do not require the traditional onsite consulting or sustained account management services that are available from other Microsoft support options.

For additional information on Microsoft Advisory Services, including on how to engage, refer to this Microsoft web page:

Microsoft Advisory Services Engagement Scenario - Windows Server 2008 R2 - Microsoft VDI Configuration

This Advisory Services scenario is designed to assist customers who are in the proactive planning stages of implementing a Windows Server 2008 R2 VDI solution.

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is an alternative desktop delivery model that allows users to access desktops running in the datacenter. This allows administrators to decouple operating system, application and data from hardware and store them in a centralized location. This advisory will focus on the installation, setup and testing of Microsoft VDI.

Discussions topics will include:

  • Documenting and taking inventory of the client and server hardware required.
  • Installation of the Hyper-V feature.
  • Installation and configuration of the RD Session Host Server.
  • Installation and configuration of the Desktop Virtualization role.
  • Installation and configuration of the Remote Desktop Connection Broker role.
  • Creation of a load-balanced Remote Desktop Session Host Server farm (optional)
  • Addition of Remote Desktop Virtualization Host server to RemoteApp and Desktop connection.
  • Installation of Remote Desktop Session Host and set it up for Redirection Mode.
  • Installation and configuration of Remote Desktop Web Access role.
  • Configuration of VDI to use installed certificate.
  • Configuration of installed virtual machines via configuration script.
  • Setup Personal Virtual Desktops and\or Virtual Desktop Pools.
  • Installation and configuration of the Remote Desktop Connection client computers.
