OFF2000: AlwaysInstallElevated Key Is Reset to Zero
This article was previously published under Q229459
When you install the Windows Installer files, the following registry keys below
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
are reset to a value of 0 (zero):
- AlwaysInstallElevated
- DisableBrowse
- DisablePatch
For security reasons, the Windows Installer Setup (Instmsiw.exe) always resets these registry values to 0 (zero). This only occurs when you are installing the Windows Installer, and not when the Windows Installer needs to run.
The Windows Installer System Policy template provides the following setting for the Windows Installer under both
Default Computer and
Default User:
Always install with elevated privileges
When this policy is implemented, the following changes are made to the registry:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
The AlwaysInstallElevated value is set to 1.
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
The AlwaysInstallElevated value is set to 1.
If the
AlwaysInstallElevated value under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer
is reset to 0 when you install the Windows Installer, it reverts to 1 the next time you log on, if you have the above system policies in effect.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
