Err Msg: Unable to Read Configuration Information for Microsoft IIS

This article was previously published under Q230776

SYMPTOMS

When you install the FrontPage Server Extensions to a Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) 4.0 computer, the following error message occurs and the install fails:
Unable to read configuration information for Microsoft Internet Information Server
When you install the FrontPage Server Extensions and have not initialized the TCP/IP stack, this error also occurs on a Windows 98-based computer that is running Personal Web Server 4.0:
Unable to read configuration information for Microsoft Personal Web Server
When you try to list Webs, you receive an error that the server could not complete your request. When you click details, you will see the following error:
Error:
The specified module could not be found.
You may also see the following error:
Cannot create folder c:\<foldername> \_vti_pvt
Where <foldername> is the name of the folder that is the document root for the virtual server you are trying to install to. Note the space after <foldername>.

CAUSE

This is usually caused by the Web server pointing to an invalid location, a trailing slash at the end of the document root path, or a path with a space at the end.

RESOLUTION

Make sure that the path to the Web server is correct and that it contains no spaces.

To check the document root path of the Web Server, do the following:
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack, point to Internet Information Server, and click Internet Service Manager. This will open the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  2. In the MMC, right-click the virtual server you are working with and click Properties.
  3. Click the Home Directory tab.
  4. In the Local Path box, check to ensure that the path to the document root is correct and that there are no trailing spaces.
  5. Click OK and close the MMC.
NOTE: If you changed the default path, be sure to stop and restart the Web server in the MMC.

To resolve this problem on a Windows 98-based computer that is running Personal Web Server 4.0, restart your computer, and then install the FrontPage Server Extensions.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
  • Microsoft FrontPage 98 Standard Edition
