Err Msg: The Web Server Does Not Appear to Have Any Authentication Methods Enabled
This article was previously published under Q230777
When you try to open a Web or publish a FrontPage Web to an IIS 4.0 Web server, the following error message may occur:
The Web server does not appear to have any authentication methods enabled. It asked for user authentication, but did not send a WWW-Authenticate header.
This occurs when you attempt an action that requires authentication, but the security on the Web server is only set to
Allow Anonymous Access and has no way to authenticate users.
Windows NT Challenge/Response (NTLM) or Basic authentication must be enabled on the server in order for FrontPage to be able to authenticate against IIS.
To set authentication methods for IIS 4.0, do the following:
- Click Start and point to Programs.
- Point to Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
- Point to Microsoft Internet Information Server.
- Click Internet Service Manager.
- Right-click on the virtual server and click Properties.
- On the Directory Security tab, click Edit for Anonymous Access and Authentication Control. At the very least, check the Basic Authentication checkbox.
- If you want a more automated and secure logon, check the Windows NT Challenge/Response checkbox.
- Click OK twice.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
- Microsoft FrontPage 98 Standard Edition
Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
