Server Error: Visual Source Safe Failure. A "File or Project Not Found" Error Occurred While Operating on File "$/Foldername"
This article was previously published under Q236960
When you attempt to move a file into a folder in FrontPage Explorer, the following error message occurs:
Server Error: Visual Source Safe failure. A "File or project not found" error occurred while operating on file "$/Foldername"
When you refresh FrontPage Explorer, a file named Pagename.htm.vsss.tmp is created, and the original file appears to no longer be under source control.
This occurs when you create a folder outside of FrontPage Explorer, and do not add the folder to Visual Source Safe Explorer.
Upgrade to the FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions.
After you upgrade, you will receive the following message if you attempt to move a file into a folder that has not been added to Visual Source Safe:
Server Error: Cannot rename "pagename.htm" to "Folder1/pagename.htm" because the destination folder "Folder1" does not exist in the source control repository. Please add this folder to the repository using the repository's tools, then try renaming the file or folder in FrontPage.
When you refresh FrontPage Explorer, no temp files are created, and the page is still under source control.
Check-in the Pagename.htm.vsss.tmp file, and rename it back to Pagename.htm using Visual Source Safe Explorer.
Another option is to choose
Recalculate Hyperlinks from the
Tools menu in FrontPage Explorer. Delete Pagename.htm, and then rename Pagename.htm.vsss.tmp to Pagename.htm (this assumes that Pagename.htm was not checked out to begin with).
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in FrontPage 97 and 98 Server Extensions.
When folders are created outside of FrontPage Explorer, it is possible to refresh FrontPage to see the new folder. Although FrontPage displays the folder, the folder is not actually added to the Visual Source Safe project. Because the folder is not actually in Source Safe, attempting to add pages to it gives the errors listed in the
Symptoms section. To add a folder to Source Safe so that you can move files into it, do the following:
- Open Visual Source Safe Explorer.
- Click the File menu.
- Select Add Files.
- Browse to the folder name and click Add.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
- Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions
- Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0 Standard Edition
Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
