Cannot Map a Network Connection to a Local Shared Resource
This article was previously published under Q238021
When you attempt to map a network connection to a shared network resource, you may receive the following error message
The following error occurred while trying to connect
<drive> to \\<computername>\<sharename>
The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again.
where <drive> is the selected drive letter, <computername> is the name of the computer you are connecting to, and <sharename> is the name of the shared resource.
This issue can occur if you attempt to map a network connection to a shared network resource on your local computer.
To work around this issue, use the local drive on your computer to gain access to the shared resource.
If you have TCP/IP installed, you can map the drive by using the IP address of the local computer in the path. Connect to your local computer by using the IP address:
\\ipaddress
After the local computer is displayed and the shared resource you want to map is displayed, right-click the share, and then click
Map Network Drive. Then, select a drive letter and accept the configuration.
This behavior is by design.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
