"Launch Browser Windows in a Separate Process" Setting Is Not Available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5

This article was previously published under Q240928

SUMMARY

The Launch browser windows in a separate process option that was on the Advanced tab in versions of Internet Explorer earlier than Internet Explorer 5.01 is not available in Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5.

This article provides additional information about this setting and how it is automatically enabled or disabled in Internet Explorer 5.01 and Internet Explorer 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

The Launch browser windows in a separate process option in Internet Explorer 5 and Windows 98 Second Edition (or the Browse in New Process option in Internet Explorer 4 and Windows 98) specifies whether a new process is created for each instance of Internet Explorer that you start. With this setting disabled, all instances of Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer that you start are run in the same process. When you enable this setting, you can prevent one instance of Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer from effecting other instances if it stops responding (hangs); however, if you enable this setting, additional resources are consumed and Internet Explorer's performance may be affected.

After you install Internet Explorer 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5.5, you cannot configure this setting because it is automatically enabled or disabled based on the amount of random access memory (RAM) that is installed in the computer. If the computer has less than 32 megabytes (MBs) of RAM installed, this setting is disabled and all instances of Internet Explorer share the same process. If there is 32 MBs of RAM or more installed on the computer, the setting is enabled, which causes new instances of Internet Explorer to create new processes.

It would be nice if this article went further to say how to fix the problem post-install.

I discovered the solution that MS didn't want you to know... ;) If this key below exists on your system's registry, it probably has a "no" setting. Change it to "yes" (or actually deleting entirely works too), then logout / login and Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer will then run in separate processes. Although the MS article states that the setting is made at install time based on the amount of system memory installed at that time, that is not the only scenario where you may be afflicted by this setting. This will happen if you have a Windows roaming profile created with IE 5.0 or earlier without the browse in separate process setting made in IE Advanced settings. If the user logs in with their roaming profile on a machine with IE 5.01 or later installed (like through an OS upgrade), this setting persists but there is no way to change it using the interface. [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\BrowseNewProcess] "BrowseNewProcess"="yes"
