Description of the Microsoft Windows Registry
When you receive a new message, no sound is played even though you selected
Play a sound in
Advanced Email Options.
This behavior can occur if the registry entry does not contain the full
path for the sound file or no sound is selected for mail notification.
To have Outlook play a sound when new mail arrives, follow these steps:
- On the Tools menu, click Options.
- On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options, and then click Advanced E-mail Options.
- Under When new items arrive, click to select the Play a sound check box.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Sounds.
- In the Events box, click New Mail Notification.
- Select a new sound, different from the current selection.
- Under Preview, click Play.
- Click OK.
If you want to return to the previous sound, repeat steps 1-5
selecting your previous sound file.
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk.
Edit the Mail Notification Sound in the Registry
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type regedit, and then click OK.
- Navigate to the following key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\MailBeep\.current
- Click .current. In the right pane, double-click (Default) to open the Edit String dialog box.
- In the Value data box, type the path and file name of the .wav file you want to use, and then click OK.
- On the Registry menu, click Exit, and then restart the computer.
Verify Sound Association
To verify that the sound event is associated with
New Mail Notification
functions, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Sounds.
- In the Events box, click New Mail Notification. The sound event should have a speaker icon beside it to indicate that this event is enabled and associated with a valid .wav file.
- Under Preview, click the Play button.
- Click OK or Cancel.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
