Errors Occur with Source Control Integration When Adding a Project

This article was previously published under Q244235

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a project to source control, you receive one of the following error messages:

In Visual InterDev:
Cannot establish source control for the Web application. The server does not have a source control system installed on it, or the user name is not recognized.
In FrontPage:
Server Error: There is a problem with source control integration on your server. Contact your web server Administrator.
When you check out a file in Visual InterDev, the following error message occurs:
Unable to check out the file 'File.htm'. Server Error: There is a problem with source control integration on your server. Contact your web server Administrator.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Network name for automatic user logon option is disabled. This option is required for use with Visual InterDev and FrontPage.

To resolve this problem, perform the following steps:
  1. Click Start, and then point to Programs.
  2. Point to Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0, and then point to Microsoft Visual SourceSafe.
  3. Click Visual SourceSafe 6.0 Admin.
  4. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  5. On the General tab, click to check the Use Network name for automatic logon check box.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions
  • Microsoft Visual SourceSafe 6.0 Standard Edition

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Thank goodness for sites like this. As stated in the preceding... "Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem." With this little bit of information I was able to solve my problem in a couple minutes with confidence that the core issue was addressed, not just the symptom.

Worth a try, but didn't work. The setting mentioned in the article was already checked on.

Same thing as Sean - my environment is VSS on Windows 2003 with FPSE 2002 installed. The kb article references it applies to FPSE 2000 only.

For those struggling with 2003, try implementing External Source control: To use external source control for a FrontPage Web project (FPSE 2002) 1. Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Services and Applications. 2. Open Internet Information Services, right-click Default Web Site, and then click Properties. 3. In the Default Web Site Properties dialog box, click the Server Extensions 2002 tab, and then click Settings. 4. Click Administration in the upper left hand corner of the Change Configuration Settings page. 5. On the Server Administration page, click Default Web Site. 6. At the bottom of the Site Administration for Server page, click the appropriate Subweb name. 7. On the Web Site Administration for Web Project page, click Configure version control. 8. On the Configure Version Control page, select the Use external version control (Visual SourceSafe only) option, type the name of your project after "$/" in the Specify which Visual SourceSafe project to use box, and then click Submit. Note If the Use External option is not available, use the SourceSafe Administrator program to open the default VSS database (either Microsoft Visual Studio or Common) and add your NT user name to the user list. If the Use External option still does not appear, return to SourceSafe Administrator and add IUSER_machinename, where machinename is the name of the host computer.
