MORE INFORMATION

The Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a Update is designed to update your Office 2000 programs and supporting files to SR-1/SR-1a level. The following Microsoft programs can be updated by the SR-1/SR-1a Update:
  • Microsoft Office 2000 Premium Edition, Professional Edition, Standard Edition, Small Business Edition, and Developer Edition
  • All stand-alone Microsoft Office 2000 programs, including Microsoft Excel 2000, Microsoft Word 2000, Microsoft Outlook 2000, Microsoft Access 2000, Microsoft PowerPoint 2000, Microsoft FrontPage 2000, and Microsoft Publisher 2000
Additionally, the SR-1/SR-1a Update lets you update your installation of Microsoft Internet Explorer to version 5.01.

Note The SR-1/SR-1a Update updates both Retail and OEM versions of Office 2000.

What the Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a Update does not do

The SR-1/SR-1a Update does not update any one of the following:
  • Administrative installations of Microsoft Office 2000. If you need to update an administrative installation, you must obtain a special version of the SR-1/SR-1a Update that is designed specifically for administrative installations.

For additional information about how to obtain the SR-1/SR-1a Administrative Update, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
257983  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=257983/ ) How to obtain the Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a Update and how to apply the update to administrative installations
  • Installations of Microsoft Office 2000 that were created by using an administrative installation. If you installed Office 2000 from an administrative installation, contact your system administrator before you install the SR-1/SR-1a Update. After your system administrator has installed the special SR-1/SR-1a Update for administrative installations, the administrator can instruct you in how to update your installation of Office 2000 to SR-1/SR-1a level.
  • Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000. The updated version of Microsoft PhotoDraw 2000 is available as a separate product or as part of the full Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a Premium Edition package.
  • Microsoft Office 2000 Language Pack files. Your existing Language Pack files should work correctly with Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a; however, when SR-1/SR-1a versions of the Language Packs become available, you should obtain and install them.
  • Non-English versions of Office 2000. Do not use the English version of the SR-1/SR-1a Update to update non-English versions of Office 2000. Non-English versions of the SR-1/SR-1a Update will be made available as they are completed.

System Requirements

Before you start downloading and installing the SR-1/SR-1a Update, make sure that your computer meets the following system requirements:
  • One or more of the programs included in Office 2000 must be installed on your computer.
  • You must have your original Office 2000 CDs available. As part of the updating process, the SR-1/SR-1a Update reinstalls Office 2000 to make sure that your Office 2000 installation is valid. Do not start the SR-1/SR-1a Update process unless you have your Office 2000 CDs.

For additional information about this requirement, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
    255499  (http://kbalertz.com/Feedback.aspx?kbNumber=255499/ ) OFF2000: Why the Office 2000 SR-1/SR-1a Update requires the Office 2000 CDs
  • The CD1 update requires a minimum of 33 MB of free space on your hard disk to install without rollback capability. Rollback capability (the ability to restore your computer to its pre-SR-1/SR-1a update condition should a problem occur) requires a minimum of 214 MB if you have a typical installation of Office 2000 Premium Edition CD1, or 263 MB if you have a complete installation of Office 2000 Premium Edition CD1.
  • The CD2 update requires a minimum of 34 MB of free space on your hard disk to install without rollback capability. Rollback capability requires a minimum of 165 MB if you have installed Office 2000 Premium Edition CD2.

How to download and install the SR-1/SR-1a Update

Note The following steps require Internet connectivity. Additionally, you will likely be prompted to insert the original install media. Because of the size of the SR-1/SR-1a Update download, you may want to download it at night or at a time when your Internet connection speed is the fastest, particularly if you do not have a broadband Internet connection.
  1. To download and install the SR-1/SR-1a Update, use your Web browser to visit the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=af6c8d03-7633-45b4-ab96-795ee656f2a2&displaylang=en (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=af6c8d03-7633-45b4-ab96-795ee656f2a2&displaylang=en)
  2. On the right side of the Web page, click Download. If you are prompted with the choice to Open or to Save O2ksr1a.exe, click Open. The SR-1a update starts downloading now. Because of the relatively large size of the download, this process can take up to several hours, depending on your Internet connection speed.
  3. After the update package is finished downloading, the interface appears. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation. If you are prompted to install the original install media during the process, do so when you are prompted.
  4. When the install process is completed, restart your computer if you are prompted to do so.

Important notes

  • Any user, even one without administrative permissions, can install the SR-1/SR-1a Update on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT 4.0. However, administrative permissions are required to update to Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 on a Windows NT 4.0 computer.
  • If your computer is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98 with user profiles enabled, each user of the computer must install the SR-1/SR-1a Update when they are logged on, using their profile.
  • The rollback feature of the SR-1/SR-1a Update is designed to restore your system to its pre-SR-1/SR-1a Update state, in case you cancel the update process or the Windows Installer reports a non-fatal error. Rollback will not function if your computer loses power, or if there is a fatal error in the installation process. If your hard disk does not have enough free disk space to support rollback, you will be prompted to continue installation of the SR-1/SR-1a Update without rollback.

How to obtain the fully downloadable SR-1 Update

This version is useful if either of the following conditions is true:
  • Your office has users who installed from CD, but you only want to download the SR-1 Update one time.
  • You want to download the SR-1 Update and keep it for future use (for example, if you reformat your computer on a regularly, or if you remove and reinstall Office frequently).
