You hear the Critical Stop sound when you start the computer

This article was previously published under Q246341

SYMPTOMS

When you start the computer, you hear the Critical Stop sound even though no critical stop occurs. Or, the volume buttons on the keyboard may not respond.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • You are using a Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition-based computer.
  • Version 1.0 of the IntelliType Pro software is installed on the computer.
  • The SpeedKey utility starts when you start the computer.
Note This behavior has only been reported with clean installations of Windows 98 SE. It has not been reported with Windows 98 SE upgrades from Microsoft Windows 95.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, download and install the latest IntelliType Pro software. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK (http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=MK)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft IntelliType Pro software, version 1.0.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft IntelliType Pro software, version 1.1.
