Device Manager Displays Only One of Two Identical CD/DVD-ROM Drives on Same Controller

SYMPTOMS

When you connect two identical CD/DVD-ROM ATAPI devices with the same INQUIRY information on the same controller, in a master/slave configuration, and then expand CD-ROM in Device Manager to view the drives, only one of them may appear. Both CD/DVD-ROM devices may still work, and both may appear in Windows Explorer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the CD/DVD-ROM ATAPI devices on separate controllers, such as Primary Slave and Secondary Master. Both devices now appear in Device Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition. This behavior occurs with Hitachi GD2500, Toshiba SD-M1202, Sony DDU220E, Pioneer DVD-103S, MKE SR-8583.

MORE INFORMATION

When you connect IDE Secondary Master to SR-8583 and connect IDE Secondary Slave to SR-8583, for example, Device Manager displays only one "MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8583". The other SR-8583 is not displayed.

When you click the option View Device by connection in Device Manager, only one connection is displayed.

When you change the INQUIRY information of one of the devices to "MATSHITA DVD-ROM SR-8583 EXXX", Device Manager displays two SR-8583 devices.

Although Device Manager displays only one device, changing the properties settings on that device affects both drives.
