SYMPTOMS

On some older computers, Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Setup may run despite the fact that the installed RAM is less than the minimum requirement of 32 MB (and without the benefit of Setup switches to get around minimum requirements). When this occurs, Setup may not finish successfully or Windows may be unstable following the installation.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because of older BIOS routines that do not respond to Setup's hardware-related queries correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install additional RAM on the computer to meet the Windows Me minimum requirements.

MORE INFORMATION

The Windows Me minimum RAM requirement is 32 MB. Installing or upgrading to Windows Me with less than 32 MB of RAM is neither recommended nor supported.

This behavior has occurred on some older Compaq models in particular.

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
