No Warning When Specifying Duplicate Computer Name in Home Networking Wizard
This article was previously published under Q250190
When you specify a computer name that is already in use on the network in the Home Networking Wizard, the wizard does not warn you that the name is not unique. The same issue exists when you change the computer name on the Identification tab in the Network tool in Control Panel.
When you reboot the computer, you may receive the following error message:
The computer name you chose matches the name of a computer on the network. To change the computer name double-click Network in Control Panel, and then click the Identification tab.
Make sure that the computer name you specify is unique on the network before you finish the Home Networking Wizard or you close the Network Properties dialog box.
APPLIES TO
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
