UDMA Is Not Enabled After You Upgrade to Windows ME
This article was previously published under Q250205
After you upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), your hard disk may not be configured to use Ultra Direct Memory Access (UDMA). Note that this issue may occur even if your hard disk and hard disk controller support UDMA.
This issue can occur if Windows Me Setup replaces your hard disk drivers or hard disk controller drivers.
To resolve this issue, enable UDMA:
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Double-click the Disk Drives branch to expand it, click the hard disk you want to use UDMA with, and then click Properties.
- Click the Settings tab.
- If the UDMA check box is available, click to select the UDMA check box, and then skip to the next step. If the UDMA check box is missing, contact the manufacturer of your hard disk or hard disk controller to inquire about the availability of drivers for your hardware that support UDMA. For information about how to contact your hardware manufacturer, view the "More Information" section of this article.
- Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer.
This behavior is by design.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
