Exchange Server and Some BackOffice Components May Not Be Installed When You Install BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

When you install BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000 Server using the steps outlined in the "Installing Microsoft BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000" white paper, Microsoft Exchange Server, BackOffice Suite Components, and the Intranet Collaboration Kit may not be successfully installed.

When you install Exchange Server, the following error messages may be displayed:
  • Microsoft Exchange Server Setup

    The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

    Microsoft Windows NT
    ID no: 0xc002041d
  • Microsoft Exchange Server Setup

    Microsoft Exchange Server Setup was
    interrupted before your new software was fully
    installed.

    You can run Microsoft Exchange Server Setup in its
    entirety at a later time to complete the installation.
After the unsuccessful Exchange Server installation, the following error message is displayed:
Web publishing service not started

The Web Publishing Service has not yet started. This service is required for Intranet Kit and Web Administrator. This service can require long startup times on some platforms. Select 'OK' to repeat the attempt to start this service.
NOTE: If you click OK, the error messaged is repeatedly displayed. You must click Cancel to bypass this error message.

When you click Cancel, the following error message is displayed:
Web publishing service not started

The Web Publishing Service has not yet started. This service is required for Intranet Kit and Web Administrator. These components cannot be installed at this time. Run BackOffice 4.5 setup again to install these components.
All other BackOffice Server components are installed, but the following error message is displayed after the installation is finished:
Your BackOffice Server Installation
The following applications did not install correctly.

Exchange Server
BackOffice Suite Components
Intranet Collaboration Kit

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use the following steps:
  1. After you receive the error messages and the installation is finished, restart the server.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, click Microsoft BackOffice, and then click Microsoft BackOffice 4.5 Setup.
  3. Choose Add BackOffice Server components, and then proceed with a custom installation.
  4. The components that were not installed in the previous installation attempt are automatically selected. Proceed with the installation, and the components are successfully installed.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem when running BackOffice Server 4.5 on Windows 2000 Server.
