Cannot Change the Default Folder Icons in Windows Explorer
This article was previously published under Q253689
This article describes how to work around changing a folder icon in Windows Explorer.
Although you cannot customize the default folder icon in Windows Explorer, you can make a shortcut to a folder and change the look of the shortcut icon. To do this:
- Right-click the folder that you want to create a shortcut to, and then click Create Shortcut.
- Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then click Change Icon.
- Click the picture of the icon you would like the shortcut to use, click OK, and then click OK.
No Icons Available
If you click Change Icon, and there are no icons available, use the Browse button to find Shell32.dll:
- Right-click the shortcut you created, click Properties, and then click Change Icon.
- Click Browse, and type c:\windows\system\shell32.dll in the File name box, click Open, click to select the icon you want to use, click OK, and then click OK.
APPLIES TO

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
