Desktop Icons May Be Rearranged After You Boot into Safe Mode
This article was previously published under Q256196
When you boot your computer into Safe mode and then restart your computer into normal mode, the icons on the desktop may be arranged differently.
This behavior occurs because the desktop icon locations are stored in the Shelliconcache file. This file is automatically deleted and re-created when you boot your computer into Safe mode.
To work around this behavior, manually rearrange your desktop icons to meet your preferences after you boot your computer into Safe mode.
When you boot into Safe mode, the standard display adaptor is used and the screen area is changed to 640x480 pixels. The desktop icons are "compressed" to fit onto the currently viewable area of the screen. When you boot back into normal mode, the icons are still arranged so they can be viewed in a 640x480 display configuration.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
