SYMPTOMS

The description of the Install Minimal, or customize your browser option for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Setup on Windows Millennium Edition (Me) is incorrect. This option is described as follows:
Select only the components you want, the folder in which to install them, choose your default browser, upgrade your Microsoft VM (for Java Support), or download the files now and install later.
The Microsoft virtual machine (VM) is not available when you are installing Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows Me. The description of the Install Minimal, or customize your browser option incorrectly says that you can install the VM when you are installing Internet Explorer 5.5 on Windows Me.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Internet Explorer 5.5 is an integrated part of Windows Me and is installed by Windows Me Setup. Under some conditions you may want to reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5 or its components (for example, to troubleshoot the program, or to verify that the program is installed correctly). In this case, instead of reinstalling Windows Me, you can install a downloadable version of Internet Explorer 5.5. You can use this version to replace core browser, scripting, Outlook Express, and MSN Messenger files. However, when you use Internet Explorer 5.5 Setup, the following Internet Explorer 5.5 components cannot be installed on the Windows Me operating system:
  • Internet Explorer Help
  • Microsoft virtual machine
  • Internet Connection Wizard
  • Internet Explorer Core Fonts
  • Dynamic HTML Data Binding
  • NetMeeting
  • Windows Media Player
  • Windows Media Player Codecs
  • Vector Graphics Rendering (VML)
  • AOL ART Image Format Support
  • Macromedia Shockwave Player
  • Macromedia Flash Player
  • Web Folders
  • Additional Web Fonts

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
