OFF2000: How to Delete, Print, or Rename a File from Within an Office Program

You can perform some file management actions from the Open dialog box and the Save As dialog box for the Office 2000 programs. For example, you can delete, print, or rename a file while you work within any of the Office programs. This article describes how to delete, print, and rename files while you work in any of the Office programs.
How to Delete a File
To delete a file, follow these steps:
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Click the name of the file that you want to delete.
- If you want to delete more than one file, press and hold down CTRL as you click the file names.
- If you want to delete several files whose names appear in a row, click the first file name that you want to delete, and then press and hold down SHIFT as you click the last file name that you want to delete.
- To delete the file or files, use either of the following methods:
- Press DELETE.
-or-
- Right-click the file name, and then click Delete.
- A message appears, asking you to confirm that you want to delete the file(s). Click Yes.
How to Print a File
To print a file, follow these steps:
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Click the name of the file that you want to print.
NOTE: The file must be in a file format that the Office program can open. - Right-click the file name, and then click Print.
NOTE: The Print command is not available in the Open dialog box when you are in Microsoft Access.
How to Rename a File
To rename a file, follow these steps:
- On the File menu, click Open.
- Click the name of the file that you want to rename.
- Right-click the file name, and then click Rename.
- Type the new name, and then press ENTER.
Other Features Available
The following table lists and describes other functions that are available when you right-click a file in the
Open dialog box and the
Save As dialog box.

Open Opens the file in the current Office program. The file
must be in a format that the Office program can open.
Open Read-Only Opens the file read-only in the current Office
program. The file must be in a format that the Office
program can open.
Open as Copy Creates a copy of the file in the same folder with a
name of "Copy of <filename>" and then opens the
new file in the current Office program. The file must
be in a format that the Office program can open.
Cut Cuts the file so that you can switch to Windows
Explorer to right-click and click Paste to move the
file to another location.
Copy Copies the file so that you can switch to Windows
Explorer to right-click and click Paste to
copy the file to another location.
Create Shortcut Creates a shortcut to the file in the current folder.
Properties Displays the file properties.
NOTE: The list may vary based on the operating system, programs installed that extend this context menu, and the file type that is selected.
