When you try to import data
into Microsoft Autoroute, into Microsoft MapPoint, or into Microsoft Street & Trips by using the Data Import Wizard, you experience one or more of the following symptoms:
- You cannot select your Excel data file.
- You receive the following error message:
There is a problem opening
this file filename. The file is not in the expected
format.
Note In this error message, filename is the name of the file that the Data Import
Wizard is trying to import. - Although the file is imported, and you can follow the prompts in
the Data Import Wizard, the Finish button in the wizard is
unavailable.
This problem occurs if one of the following conditions
is true:
- You are using Excel 2007 or a later version, and your data file is saved in the .xlsx or .xlsm format.
Note Both Streets & Trips and MapPoint 2009 support the .xlsx format. However, these programs do not support macro-enabled workbooks that have the .xlsm file name extension. - The file that the Data Import Wizard is trying to import is
damaged.
- Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) is missing or
is damaged.
- The file that the Data Import Wizard is trying to import is
locked or is being used by another program or by another user.
- You were not logged on as an administrator during the
installation process.
- The file name is longer than 63 characters.
Additionally, you may receive the error message if the following
conditions are true:
- You are trying to link to a Microsoft Access query.
- The query is running from a linked table in the same
database.
- The linked table is accessing a table inside a different
Access database.
Note If you are using a newer version of Excel than the version that created the data file, save the file in “Excel 97 – 2003 Workbookâ€
format. The products that are listed in the "Applies to" section of this article do not support the import of an .xlsx file.
To resolve this problem, export the query to the database that contains the original table that you tried to import as data. The query and the table must be in the same database to establish the link to the query.
If this procedure does not resolve the problem, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. If you still experience the problem after you use the first method, go to the second method.
Note Before you use these methods, make sure that no other programs are using the source
file, make sure that these programs are closed, and make sure that no other users have opened the file that you want to import.
Method 1: Install Access Database Engine
Note Close all the applications before you access the product DVD.
Streets and Trips 2008 and earlier versions of the program do not contain the AccessDatabaseEngine.exe file. If you have one of these versions, install the Access Database Engine from the Web site that follows the steps.
- Insert the Streets & Trips or MapPoint DVD in the DVD drive.
-
Click Start, click My Computer, and then browse to the following location (as appropriate for your program):
<drive>:\MapPoint\MSMap\Redist\ADE
<drive>:\ Streets\MSMap\Redist\ADE
Note <drive> is the disc drive that contains the product installation DVD.
- Double-click AccessDatabaseEngine.exe, and then follow the instructions on your screen. Reboot the computer if you are if prompted.
Or, to access an online installation point for Access Database Engine, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
Method 2: Manually register the MDAC files
To do this, follow these steps:
- Close all open windows.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
cmd
- At the command prompt, type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command:
- regsvr32.exe Msexcl40.dll
- regsvr32.exe Msexch40.dll
- regsvr32.exe Msrd2x40.dll

- regsvr32.exe Msltus40.dll
- regsvr32.exe Mspbde40.dll
- regsvr32.exe Mstext40.dll
- regsvr32.exe Msxbde40.dll
- Start Autoroute, MapPoint, or Streets & Trips, and then try to import files again.
Method 3: Make sure that you have the latest version of MDAC
To do this, follow these steps.
Step 1: Determine which version of MDAC is installed
To do this, follow these steps.
