HP 3300C ScanJet Scanner Setup Results in "USB BIOS Enable Fail" Error in Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q281944
If this article does not describe your hardware-related issue, please see the following Microsoft Web site to view more articles about hardware:
When you try to install the original PrecisionScan LT scanning software for the Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3300C scanner in a newly installed version of Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may receive the following error message:
USB BIOS Enable Fail.
The Setup program was unable to turn on your USB ports. Please contact your computer manufacturer's support line to assist you in turning on your USB support in the BIOS.
Even if Universal Serial Bus (USB) support is enabled in the computer's BIOS, you will repeatedly receive this message. This message will appear when you follow the procedure on the setup poster that you receive with the ScanJet 3300C.
This behavior does not occur on upgraded versions of Windows Me.
To resolve this issue, obtain the new Hewlett-Packard ScanJet 3300C scanning software for Windows Me from Hewlett-Packard.
With the following workaround, you may be able to install the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Precision Scan LT software:
- Insert the HP 3300C Precision Scan LT Software CD-ROM in the drive, and then click Exit when the "USB BIOS Enable Fail" error appears.
- Open Windows Explorer. Do not try to navigate through the My Computer folder because this causes Setup.exe on the root drive of the compact disc to start, which produces the "USB BIOS Enable Fail" error message.
- Click the PLUS SIGN (+) to the left of the CD-ROM drive to expand the contents of the HP CD-ROM.
- Click the English folder in the left pane.
- Double-click the Setup.exe file that is located in this folder, and follow the steps to install the software.
- Download and install the HP PrecisionScan LT v3.0 Update patch (Sj514en.exe), which you can download from the following Hewlett Packard Web site:
- Restart your computer.
