STS: Error Message: The Document Could Not Be Opened

This article was previously published under Q286282

SYMPTOMS

When you choose an Office XP template (.dot, .xlt, .pot, and so on) for your Document Library template in SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft, the Edit Template hyperlink in the General Settings displays the following error message:
The document could not be opened.
The required application may not be installed properly, or the template for this Document Library cannot be opened.

CAUSE

The Edit Template hyperlink in the General Settings of a Document Library is not designed to open Office template files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Office template in the original Office program where it was created.
  2. On the File menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save as Type list, click Word Document (*.doc) if you are in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel Workbook (*.xls) if you are in Microsoft Excel, or Presentation (*.ppt) if you are in Microsoft PowerPoint.
  4. Give the file a name, and then save it in the Web that contains the Document Library.
  5. Click Save.
  6. Browse to your Document Library, and then click Modify columns and settings.
  7. Click Change general settings.
  8. In the Template URL edit box, type the full path and file name to the file that you saved in step 4.

MORE INFORMATION

You cannot edit PowerPoint files (.ppt) or templates (.pot) by using the Edit Template hyperlink.

NOTE: You can use these files as templates, but you cannot edit them by using Edit Template in the Document Library General Settings.
