Cannot start a trial version of Office XP or Office 2003 on Terminal Server

This article was previously published under Q287039

SYMPTOMS

When you log on to a Microsoft Windows Terminal Server computer by using an Administrator account, and you start a Microsoft Office XP or a Microsoft Office 2003 program, you may receive the following message:
This copy of Microsoft Program cannot be used on Terminal Server. Please contact your local authorized Microsoft retailer for more information.
When you attempt to start an Office program from within a Terminal Server Client session, you may receive the following error message
This feature is not available. For more information, contact your system administrator.
and the Office program quits.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when a trial edition of Office XP or Office 2003 has been installed on a Terminal Server computer.

The installation of a trial edition of Office is not supported by Terminal Server.

RESOLUTION

Remove the trial edition of Office and reinstall a mandatory activation or Enterprise edition of Office , which has no license-expiration date. The mandatory activation of Office requires that the administrator activate the product before any Terminal Server clients are able to use the Office programs.
