Categories Do Not Sort in Alphabetical Order

This article was previously published under Q287271

SYMPTOMS

When you assign categories to a document by using the Search and Categories property page or on a document profile, the drop-down list of categories may not be displayed in alphabetical order.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the categories are listed in the order that the categories were created, not in alphabetical order, the way the categories are displayed in the dashboard site.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, sort categories alphabetically by using the Category Sort tool, which is included in the SharePoint Portal Server Resource Kit. The Category Sort tool is located at the following Microsoft Web site:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/SharePointPortalServer/Utility/1/NT5/EN-US/category_sort.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/sharepointportalserver/utility/1/nt5/en-us/category_sort.exe)
A coordinator can also manually modify the sort order by using the Document Profile Manager:
  1. Double-click My Network Places, double-click your workspace Web folder, double-click Management, and then double-click Document Profiles.
  2. Double-click the Web Link profile, or any other profile that has the categories property enabled.
  3. Click the Properties tab, click Categories, and then click Edit.
  4. Click Edit values, and then use the arrow keys to arrange the categories in the order that you want.

Community Feedback System

Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back. Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.

Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
