STS: Cannot Filter a Custom List by Using the Hyperlink Field

This article was previously published under Q288535

SYMPTOMS

When you create a custom list that includes a hyperlink field, you cannot filter the list by using that field.

CAUSE

SharePoint Team Services from Microsoft does not allow filtering on hyperlink fields.

WORKAROUND

SharePoint Team Services renders any text field that starts with "http:/" as a hyperlink field.

Instead of creating a hyperlink field in your list, create a single line text field, and set the default value for the field to be <http://>. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Browse to your list, and then click Modify settings and columns.
  2. Click Add a new column.
  3. Type the name that you want in the Column name field.
  4. Click Single line of text in the Type of information list.
  5. Click the Yes button under Require that this column contains information.
  6. In the Default value edit box, type <http://>, and then click OK.
  7. Click All Items under Views.
  8. Scroll down to the Filter section.
  9. Click the Show items only when the following is true button.
  10. Select the field that you created in step 3 in the Show the items when column list, and then set the criteria that you want. Click OK.
