Setup Fails When Office Server Extensions Are Installed

This article was previously published under Q291564

SYMPTOMS

When you install SharePoint Portal Server on a computer that has Microsoft Office Server Extensions installed, Setup fails, and you receive an error message. If you remove the Office Server Extensions, you may still receive the same error message.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because SharePoint Portal Server and Microsoft Office Server Extensions cannot coexist. Even after you remove the Office Server Extensions, some information for Office Server Extensions may still exist in the registry.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, delete the following key from the registry, and then run Setup again:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Web Server

MORE INFORMATION

An error message also occurs if you attempt to install SharePoint Portal Server on a server that has SharePoint Team Services 2002 installed. You must remove SharePoint Team Services and delete the registry key that is described in the "Resolution" section of this article before you install SharePoint Portal Server. It is possible to install SharePoint Team Services after you install SharePoint Portal Server; however, you lose some functionality. For more information, refer to the "SharePoint Portal Server and SharePoint Team Services Coexistence" section in the SharePoint Portal Server Release Notes (Readme.htm) on the installation CD-ROM.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001
