This article was previously published under Q291676

SYMPTOMS

SharePoint Portal Server does not index the content of Rich Text Format (RTF) files; only the properties of RTF files are indexed.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because SharePoint Portal Server does not contain an index filter for RTF files.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use the index filter for RTF files that is either available in the SharePoint Portal Server Resource Kit or located at the following Microsoft Web site:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/SharePointPortalServer/Utility/1/NT5/EN-US/RTF.exe (http://download.microsoft.com/download/sharepointportalserver/utility/1/nt5/en-us/rtf.exe)

MORE INFORMATION

SharePoint Portal Server includes index filters for Microsoft Office documents, Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) files, Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) files, and text files. You can also register third-party and custom index filters on the server to index other file types.
