OFFXP: Earlier Versions of Office Programs Are Listed in Microsoft Office Application Recovery Utility

This article was previously published under Q292502

SYMPTOMS

When you start the Microsoft Office Application Recovery utility, earlier versions of Office programs are listed as running applications. Also, when you select an earlier version of an Office program and click either Recover Application or End Application, the program is not shut down.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Office Application Recovery utility is designed to work with running Office XP programs. Even though the utility lists earlier versions of Office programs, you cannot use the features of the utility with the earlier versions of Office programs.

WORKAROUND

If an earlier version of an Office program stops responding (hangs), press CTRL+ALT+DEL to display the Task Manager dialog box (Microsoft Windows 2000 and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0) or the Close Program dialog box (Microsoft Windows 98 and Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition). From either of these dialog boxes, click End Task to shut down the program that stopped responding.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Office programs listed in the Microsoft Office Application Recovery dialog box are not listed with a version number. For example, if Word 97 and Excel 2002 are currently running, you see the following listed:
Application Status
---------------------------
Microsoft Word Running
Microsoft Excel Running

There is no way to determine which version is running when you view the running Office applications in the Microsoft Office Application Recovery dialog box.

APPLIES TO
  • Microsoft Access 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Excel 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Publisher 2002 Standard Edition
  • Microsoft Word 2002 Standard Edition
