TIFF Filter Does Not Perform OCR on Indexed Files
This article was previously published under Q294303
After you enable optical character recognition (OCR) for the Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) filter, you can successfully index TIFF files, but you may not be able to locate the text contents of the files in searches. No errors are reported in the content source statistics and you can find the file names in search queries (for example, File.tif).
This problem can occur if the default content access account on the server is not a member of the local Administrators group.
To resolve this problem, either add the default content access account to the local Administrators group, or change the account to an account that is already a local administrator.
To add the default content access account to the local Administrators group:
- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Computer Management.
- Under System Tools, click to expand Local Users and Groups.
- Open the Groups folder, and then double-click Administrators.
- Click Add, and then click the default content access account.
To change the default content access account for the server:
- Click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click SharePoint Portal Server Administration.
- In the tree, right-click the server name.
- Click the Accounts tab.
- Click Default Content Access Account, and then click Configure.
- Type the account information.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
The TIFF filter that is installed by default with Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server 2001 and with Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 does not perform OCR on the TIFF files that the TIFF filter indexes. To enable OCR so that TIFF file contents are indexed, run the Tiff_ocr_on.reg file in the Support\Tools folder on the SharePoint Portal Server CD. For additional information about installing and configuring the TIFF filter, see the SharePoint Portal Server Administrator Help.

correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
