Documents and Folders Cannot Be Created in the Workspace Root

This article was previously published under Q294467

SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a new folder in the workspace root by using Web folders, you may receive the following error message:
You do not have permissions to create subfolders, or there are network problems preventing authentication from the server.
When you try to copy a document into the workspace root by using Web folders, you may receive the following error message:
You do not have permissions to copy this file or folder, or there are network problems preventing authentication from the server.
If you click the Document Library tab in the dashboard site, and then click Add Sub-folder, after you type the folder name, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred while processing your request. Please contact your system administrator for this server.
If you click the Document Library tab in the dashboard site, and then click Add Document, after you type the document name, you may receive the following error message:
Access Denied - You do not have permission to access this item.

You do not have permission to add documents in this location. If you believe that you have received this message in error, contact the coordinator for this folder.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because when you open a Web folder shortcut or open the Document Library dashboard in the dashboard site, the workspace root view is displayed. You cannot create document folders and files in the root of the workspace. Every workspace has a default Documents folder in the workspace root. Manage and organize all user documents in this default folder.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, add files and folders in the Documents folder or the Portal Content folder of the workspace.

Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what didn't.

Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry edits), please consult a professional.
