OFFXP: Outlook Option for Keeping Earlier Version Is Unavailable
This article was previously published under Q295344
When you upgrade from an earlier version of Microsoft Office, the check box for Microsoft Outlook under
Remove previous versions of Office applications may be selected and unavailable (appears dimmed).
The
Microsoft Outlook check box is selected and unavailable if an earlier version of Outlook is installed on your computer, and your Setup configuration is set to install Outlook 2002.
Only one version of Outlook can be installed on your computer at one time. This option is unavailable to prevent you from installing Outlook 2002 while keeping an earlier version of Outlook installed.
NOTE: At the bottom of the
Remove previous versions of Office applications dialog box, the following text appears if an earlier version of Outlook is installed and your Setup configuration is set to install Outlook 2002:
Previous versions of Outlook must be removed to install Microsoft Outlook 2002.
If you want to keep an earlier version of Outlook installed, you will not be able to install Outlook 2002. To install Office XP without Outlook 2002, follow these steps:
- Run Setup for Office XP.
- In the Choose the type of installation you need dialog box, select Custom and then click Next.
- In the Choose which applications for setup to install dialog box, clear the check box for Microsoft Outlook and then click Next.
When the Remove previous versions of Office applications dialog box appears, the option for Microsoft Outlook will be selected by default, but it will no longer be unavailable.

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
