How to Specify the Server Name That Is Used in E-mail Notification Messages
This article was previously published under Q296602
If you follow the instructions described in Administrator's Help or in a draft version of the extranet white paper that was published before May 2001 to change the server URL for e-mail notification messages to the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the server by using the Web Storage System Explorer tool, the procedure does not work.
The instructions described in the
Specify the Server URL to Use in E-mail Notifications topic in the Advanced Topics section in Administrator's Help and in draft versions of the "Deploying Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Across an Extranet" extranet white paper are incorrect. In this document, step five states:
In Name, type: urn:schemas-microsoft-com:publishing:ServerURL
This line is incorrect. The following line contains the correct syntax:
urn:schemas-microsoft-com:publishing:ServerUrl
The value is case-sensitive and must be typed exactly as specified.
The May 2001 versions and later versions of the white paper contain the corrected information.
SharePoint Portal Server sends e-mail notification messages for document approval requests and subscription notifications. The URLs in the notification messages use the NetBIOS name of the server by default, or you can modify it so that the server's FQDN is used instead. For example, the URL for a server named "AdventureWorks" is http://Adventure (the NetBIOS name) by default, but you can change the name to http://Adventure.adventure-works.com (the FQDN). SharePoint Portal Server cannot automatically choose the form of the server name that is appropriate for a particular e-mail recipient; therefore, one server name must be used for all notification messages that are sent from all workspaces on the server.
To change the name to the FQDN, add a property to the folder that contains all the workspaces on the server. You can edit this property by using Web Storage System Explorer in the Web Storage System Software Development Kit (SDK). The Web Storage System SDK is available at the following Microsoft Web site:
The "Deploying Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server Across an Extranet" white paper contains instructions for how to specify the server name. This white paper can be downloaded from the following Microsoft Web site:

Community Feedback System
Very often, it takes hours to solve a problem. Very often, you've looked high
and low, and have tried a lot of solutions. When you finally found it, chances
are, it was because someone else helped you. Here's your chance to give back.
Use our community feedback tool to let others know what worked for you and what
didn't.
Please also understand that the community feedback system is not warranted to be
correct, it's simply a system that we've built to let people try and help each
other. If something in a feedback response doesn't make sense to you, or you're
not comfortable making changes that the feedback talks about (like registry
edits), please consult a professional.
Thank you for using kbAlertz.com Feedback System.
