IIS 5: SMTP and NNTP Virtual Server Missing in Internet Services Manager

This article was previously published under Q297261

On This Page

SYMPTOMS

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) Service and Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) Services are installed on a server running Internet Information Services (IIS) version 5.0, but the virtual servers do not appear in the Internet Services Manager Microsoft Management Console (MMC). The services work properly, but they cannot be configured.

CAUSE

The File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service is not installed on the Web server. The SMTP and NNTP services are dependent on this service.

RESOLUTION

IIS 5.0

To make the virtual servers visible, install the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service. To do this, follow these steps in IIS 5.0:

NoteThese steps assume that at least one network card is installed on the server and that the Windows 2000 Server setup CD is accessible.
  1. On the desktop, right-click My Network Places, and then click Properties. The Network and Dial-up Connections window opens and shows the default connections (such as the Local Area Connection).
  2. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  3. In the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box, click Install.
  4. In the Select Network Component Type dialog box, select Service, and then click Add.
  5. In the Select Network Service dialog box, select File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.
Note If File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is already installed and this same problem is occurring, try removing and reinstalling File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks to resolve the problem.

IIS 6.0

To make the virtual servers visible, install the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks service. To do this, follow these steps in IIS 6.0:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Network Connection.
  3. Click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
  4. Click the General tab, click to select the Printer Sharing check box, and then click Install.
