SharePoint Portal Server 2001 fails, and you receive an "0x80072eef" error message

SYMPTOMS

When Sharepoint Portal Server setup fails, you may receive a fatal error window with a red X next to the Web Storage System component. The following error messages are logged in Errorlog.txt, which is located at Systemroot\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Logs:
[05/10/01,08:43:13] SharePoint Portal Server: [2] CVAIComponent, Error 0x80072eef: VAIFy failed
[05/10/01,08:43:13] SharePoint Portal Server: [0] CVAIComponent::Install, Error setting up VAI.

In addition, the following event ID messages may be logged in the Application event log:

Component Server Setup - Operation Schema Creation failed. The error description or URL being processed was: . The error code returned was 0x80072eef. Internal code 725 (or 302).

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because HTTP Keep-Alives are disabled on the Default Web site properties.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, enable HTTP Keep-Alives on the Default Web site.
  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Internet Services Manager.
  2. Click to expand the server name, right-click Default Web site, and then click Properties.
  3. Click the HTTP Keep-Alives check box.
  4. Restart the Default Web site.
You can now start the Setup program and click the Repair option to continue to install Sharepoint Portal Server.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
